Brahmachari [celibate] according to the views of Abhinavagupta

__________________________

"He who honors sexual intercourse

maithuna[1] is considered a brahmachari".

Tantric sublimation, the transformation of sexual energy is a form of chastity (brahmacharya). Abhinavagupta characterizes a brahmachari as follows:

one who is at ease ... who, even during sexual fusion, maintains perfect awareness, and his body is extremely calm; who is fully aware of what behavior according to atimarga (tradition) is considered unacceptable; who fully enlightened and truly conscious, who is always independent, who comes into contact with objects only in order to acquire a supernatural ability to be aware, to experience his own consciousness, and not in greed, who does not have the attitude of a "bound animal" - one who unconditionally devoted to the great path.

One whose behavior indicates attentiveness to his own self, both in the midst of worldly affairs and during the performance of the rituals of the "left" path (vamachara), never allows ejaculation during the ritual (ritual intercourse). If, nevertheless, ejaculation happens:

“If the mind at the moment of ejaculation spontaneously calms down (all vibrations of thought stop), consciousness of bliss immediately arises in it. The resulting state is exhaustively described as "belonging to Brahman." (2)

Thus, the main criterion for brahmacharya is the state of consciousness constantly immersed in the Absolute (Brahman).

1. Maithuna - Sexual union, intercourse in the Hindu and Buddhist tantric traditions. In the process of maithuna, a man and a woman turn into a divine couple, are perceived as the embodiment or expression of divine essences. On a subtle level - the union of Shiva and Shakti in the Sahasrara Chakra upon awakening and raising the Kundalini Shakti.
